2018 – Imagine & Go Recap – Favorite Travel Experiences and Locations

  • December 17, 2018

Another year has gone by, can you believe it? This one seemed to go particularly quickly. I feel like I just wrote up last year’s year in review post! But here’s the recap of our favorite travel experiences of 2018!

2018 was a great year for our family. After spending a lot of 2017 at Disneyland with annual passes, (you can read about tips for Disney annual passes here), we decided to take a break from having passes to  have more time to travel to other locations. And travel we did!

Here’s the year in review!

Santa Cruz, California — We kicked off the new year in Santa Cruz at our cabin in the mountains. Santa Cruz is one of our favorite places to travel to  and we go there often. I updated the Santa Cruz blog post recently and added a few new hikes, restaurants and activities to try out.  Go here to read the updated Santa Cruz post.

Big Basin State Park

Sayulita, Mexico — For Spring Break, we headed south to Sayulita, Mexico. Travel from San Diego to Sayulita was a breeze and fairly cheap by going with Volaris, a Mexican low cost airline, as well as crossing over the indoor CBX bridge from San Diego to the Tijuana Airport.  Sayulita is a small town an hour drive from Puerto Vallarta. It’s beautiful, the food is incredible and its very family friendly. We LOVED it and I can’t wait to go back. I wrote up a post about Sayulita here.

San Diego, California — We were tourists in our own town and visited the Cabrillo Tidepools at the end of Point Loma which are so beautiful and amazing (post on that here), and we also checked out the USS Midway (read that post here). Both are such great places to check out with kids. This year we also took our son to his first Padres game with his little league team at Petco Park downtown. He loves baseball and was thrilled to see a game in person (I however find baseball rather slow 😉 Petco Park is a great venue however and its fun to visit.

Cooking! — I attempted to blog on recipes from all my cookbooks but got sidetracked with all our travel and only got to writing up a few. here are links to the recipes — all so delicious! Sausage and Lentils (recipe), Ottolenghi Turkey Meatballs (recipe), Ranchero Stew (recipe), and Roasted Artichokes with lemon (recipe). YUM!

Turkey Meatballs

Paso Robles, California — For my 40th birthday my hubby took me to one of my favorite places — Paso Robles, CA and we rode our bikes through wineries and stayed in an airstream which was so much fun and way better than a hotel. He also surprised me by having my folks bring our kids for the last night. I was so shocked and couldn’t help crying — it was such a special birthday.

San Francisco, California — I finally got to check out the SFMOMA on a work trip to the City. I really loved it and especially enjoyed the Warhol’s and pop art. The post I wrote about that is here.

Road Tripping! —In June we took off for a SEVEN week road trip from San Diego, to Santa Cruz, to Big Sur to Petaluma (Sonoma county) to camping up the Oregon Coast followed by a week in Portland, five days in Bend, Oregon and finally camping in Lake Tahoe at our favorite spot. It was SUCH a fun, tiring, and overall amazing trip. The family time, the hikes, bike rides, restaurants, scenery were absolutely incredible. I have written up a few posts from this trip (See my post on tips for Bend, Oregon, and my post on Big Sur)  and plan to write more soon. Some of my tips for road trips are posted here.

Floating down the Deschutes to beat the 100 degree weather!

Paris, France —Dave and I were able to travel to Europe in September. We went to London again (I have a yearly conference there) and this time we extended our trip and went to Paris for a few days. It was Dave’s first time in Paris. We stayed in the Montremarte area (18th arrindossment) and absolutely loved it. It really is such a romantic city. I did a post with some tips for Americans traveling to Paris that you can read here.

Its always so fun to recap the year and reflect on all the fun, experiences and time together as a family. I hope that you had a great year and that you are imagining up all sorts of wonderful places to go and see — even if those are in your own hometown!

As for us – I think 2019 travel will center around a five week trip to Spain this summer. I’ve been in planning mode already and would love any tips – Comment below!

Cheers and happy holidays all!
